Final Digipak & Advert A.R.

Final Digipak and Advert

Digipak & Advert Final Design

Since getting my comments back for my draft digipak, I have used them to improve and create my final digipak. One of the big improvements that I have made on my digipak is the font. I made this change as I felt the old font looked old fashioned and didn't really suit the type of genre I was aiming at, so I changed it to a much bolder and indie font, Bebas Kai. Another change that I made to my digipak was that I downsized a lot of the text as it was far too large on the draft and made it looked slightly cluttered. The barcode was also another issue that I had to change, this is because the old one was far too large and did not use a white background, the new barcode however is a much better size and features the white background with is appropriate for an album. I also made a minor improvement to the album's images. These included using larger squares in order to see their faces and eyes clear.

The same changes that I made on my digipak, I made on my advert. This is because I still wanted to keep the same thing and feature the album cover photo on the poster. The changes I have made include the advert's font, as it is now a more modern and larger font. It is also the same font as the one I have used for my digipak. The record company logo has also been altered as I have downsized it and made it less obvious.

Digipak Journey

1. The idea started from looking at art work and sketches that used geometric shape and had a forth dimension feel about it. After seeing this type of work I knew that I wanted to used shapes in my work. (1&2)

2. I then went on to get inspiration from the square art work by the artist Piet Mondrian. I especially enjoyed the piece Composition ll. These pieces inspired me to use these straight edged shapes for my digipak and advert (3, 4 & 5).

3. From this, I then started to look at mosaic pieces that used the small coloured squares, a little bit like the Piet Mondrian artwork except the squares are the same size as it creates a pattern. After finding this piece I knew that I wanted to use same size squares and would further my research into this. (6)

4. I followed on by looking at work from the artist Peter Blake. His work is very pop art and really stands out in comparison to my other research. (7)

5. Following on from this, I looked further into the square patterns, however I also looked into black and white versions of square grid art. After this I decided that I definitely wanted my digipak and advertisement to incorporate the black and white theme as it looks sophisticated and simple. (8)

6. The next step I took was to start looking at different albums that incorporated the same sort of ideas as this. One album I was specifically interested in was the album 'More Songs About Buildings and Food' by 'The Talking Heads' (9)

7. I then went on to get inspiration from more album artwork, and there was one that I particularly liked. This was the album 'Atlas' by 'Real Estate' and the reason I liked it so much was because it acquired the same style square art that I have been researching into and it also uses a very simplistic design, which made me decide that I also wanted to incorporate this into my digipak and advert. (11)

8. Following this, I soon started looking at album covers that used black and white images. The Clash's album stood out to me as the black and white effect is just right as is not too light and it's not too dark, it also involves a few members of the band. This is what I want for my band's album as it would then stand out over others. (12)

9. Whilst looking through my old CD's, I stumbled across King's Of Leon's first album 'Youth & Young Manhood'. When looking at the album I noticed that the inside panels of the digipak used the same conventions that I want to use for my album. This is when I decided that I wanted to use this concept for the inside panel/panels of my digipak in order to keep a theme going throughout it. (13)

10. After this I went on to look at more albums to get some more ideas for my front cover of it. From this I found three albums that I really enjoyed. The first album was 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?' by The Vaccines. I chose this album because it used a very simplistic and bold album cover as it uses a square picture in the centre and the bands name just above so it is definitely something I would want to incorporate into my design. The second album was 'Unknown Pleasures' by Joy Division, which also used an image in the centre of the cover. It is also black and white in order to stand out more. The final album that I looked at was 'Chat And Business' by Ikara Colt and was my favourite album that I looked at. The reason for this is because It uses a black and white theme and also the geometric white squares which are the highlight of the cover. It also features the bands name in the top left hand corner, showing who it is by. These are the types of factors in which I want to use for my digipak and advert. (14,15&16)

11. The next stage of the journey was to put all of my research together and create a draft digipak and advert. I chose the image of my two band members and made it black and white. I then disfigured and cut the image up to make a grid of squares and placed the image in the exact centre of the panel. I also decided to use the bands name 'The Franks' just below the image. (17)

12. After adjusting the image and and making the squares larger, I decided to keep the changes. I also made my mind up to change the font to a more modern and 'indie' style which was more suitable to my target audience.  (18&19)

iPhone Filming

As we decided that we were definitely going to use an iPhone 5c to film our music video, we did not have much equipment to take as we only needed the iPhone in terms of the filming. When at the location, there was not a lot of setting up to do and we were very quick to start filming. This was because we only had to sort out the instruments and the speakers, instead of setting up a tripod and other camera accessories. Whilst filming, we found that the iPhone video camera was extremely easy to use, especially in comparison to the HD camera which was used for the draft music video. After taking a few of the shots on the iPhone, we went back and observed them to check whether or not they were up to the standard which we wanted. What we found was that the videos looked very clear and smooth which is what we wanted. When the videos were uploaded to the computers we found that the videos looked even better, especially when the black and white effect was used. We also took more shots than expected, in order to make sure we did not have a lack of different shots or camera angles when editing. Overall we are very pleased with the result that we got from filming the music video on our iPhone, even though there was a high risk of something going wrong, it is fair to say that we achieved what we wanted.

iPhone Research

When researching into how music videos are made and the best techniques used, we found that some people have used their iPhone 5's to film music videos and even movies. Looking further into this we found that it would definitely be possible for us to use this type of film making and try something a bit more different which doesn't follow the conventions of a typical indie genre music video. It is not like the camera is awful because it is actually a high quality camera with good reviews and praise. We know that there are some risks involved as these videos do not always work and look to a professional level, but if done right It can give the music video its own unique look. We have decided to use this technique after we had trouble with our draft and the HD camera which was used. The problems we faced were that the camera struggled to focus and was very poor with the battery life also.

The pieces  of work in which we found this idea include the following:

Uneasy Lies The Mind -

This is the first narrative feature film to be shot entirely on an iPhone. In an interview with GizMag, director Ricky Fosheim said "The iPhone 'look' that I created fit the story, mood, tone, and the character's inner psyche way more than any other traditional camera could have". Though the iPhone video camera was perfect for convenience and portability, it predictably had its downfalls compared to standard professional film equipment, including a relatively low battery life and trouble performing in cold weather. Fosheim also said "I'm not advocation for everyone to go shoot their next movie on the iPhone, but if you can find a creative and plausible way to make it work, then I would encourage you to take as many risks as you can and try to push the limits".

Flakjakt - "Cascades" -

Cascades is a music video by the artist Flakjakt (Steve Failows). It is also the first official iPhone 4 music video that was made. iPhones have been used to shoot amateurish music videos for years now, but professional-grade videos can be achieved as well. The music video was created by both the artist Flakjakt, and director Marty Martin who collaborated together to create an original song, "Cascades", specifically for this iPhone 4 shoot.

Searching For Sugar Man -

Searching for Sugar Man, an Oscar-winning documentary for Best Feature Documentary, is also another feature which uses the iPhone. Although only a few of the movie scenes were shot with an iPhone, it is still used non the less. The reason for the director, Malik Bendjelloul, using these iPhone shots was because they simply lack of money, so they decided to use a much cheaper filming option with a lot of risks, but it paid off in the end. The majority of the film was shot on Super 8mm film, and the iPhone scenes were shot with the 8mm Vintage Camera app, which includes the bar scene in the beginning of the movie where the producers discover Rodriguez.

Mac 30th Anniversary Video -

Only a few months ago for the Mac's 30th anniversary, Apple released a 125 second iPhone 5s video showing the the company's fulfilment of its promise to "put technology in the hands of the people" over the course of one day. It's a must see for apple fans and really shows off the camera quality on the iPhone 5s.

Peer Feedback for Video Draft A.R.

Peer Feedback for Our Video Draft
Sanjay Patel -

"Hi Alex!
For a draft, your work is at a very high standard. It is clear that you and Will have put lots of effort in to be successful!
Changes needed -
Focus the camera to ensure that the video looks professional.
Ensure that the band look enthusiastic!
And have some more focus on your band members (Derry) "

This was the email we received from Sanjay Patel for our music video draft. From these comments we were able to see that we need to either use another camera (which we later  do and experiment with), or to learn how to use the camera that we were using at the time so that we can get the best video possible. As the song is a fast pace, up tempo song, the feedback that the band should look more enthusiastic was taken on board which is why we believe that for our final video will need to have the band looking more enthusiastic to create more tempo in the song. In addition to this we will need to add more focus on the lead people / instruments in the band, such as the drums and the singer.

Chloe Phillips -

"This is a good video to have produced for your draft. obviously i can see you haven't got all the shots you wanted yet and i would encourage that you change your piano player, as he doesn't look the part, maybe even a new drummer too that can play in time with the sounds. I would even go to say that maybe not include shots of audience because the band look the part and would look good on their own being filmed. well done looking forward to your final product."

From this feedback we have decided that we are going to have to alter the band around, especially for the drummer as they are very influential in the song so there will be a lot of focus on them, which means that they will need to be in sync with the song. We will have to ensure that we use an actual drummer so that they will have the correct rhythm for the song. For our final video we are going to film the band on the stage and on the stage only instead of including audience shots. This is because we believe it will be too difficult to create a realistic setting and rely on people turning up.
